Specialists opinions on lastest diacetyl & “popcorn lung” research | I Love E-Cigs

A study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, by researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health reported finding diacetyl in 39 of 51 flavors of popular e-cigarettes’ aerosol. The study links chemical diacetyl to a serious lung disease called bronchiolitis obliterans or “popcorn lung”. The research had extensive media coverage causing alarm and confusion among vapers. However, according to health specialists, the publication contained flaws in the methods and findings and failed to mention that cigarettes contain an average of 750 times more diacetyl than the quantities found in the e-cigarettes studied. Here is what they said:

“The article is creating false impressions and exaggerates the potential risk from diacetyl and acetyl propionyl exposure through e-cigarettes. They failed to mention that these chemicals are present in tobacco cigarette smoke and violated a classical toxicological principle that the amount determines the toxicity and the risk.”
Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos

“The researchers used an aggressive procedure that vaped the samples dry. Each “puff” was eight seconds long an unrealistic length of time that could have produced higher-than-normal temperatures, combustion and smoke. […] Laboratory investigations of e-cigarettes should use validated methods to assure credibility. The results of the Harvard Buttery Flavor Study do not meet this standard.”
Professor Brad Rodu

“It is disingenuous and actually damaging to the public’s health to spread the message that vaping causes fatal lung disease or even that it appears to increase the risk for popcorn lung. And it is especially disingenuous and damaging to send these messages to the public without telling us that smoking produces exposure to diacetyl that is on average about 750 times higher than vaping.”
