The first group only smoked tobacco cigarettes, the second switched to vaping e-cigarettes that contained nicotine, and the third used zero nicotine e-cigs. The results of the analysis showed that participants who vaped, regardless of whether their e-liquid contained nicotine or not, showed significant improvement to their endothelial function — an action that measures how easily blood flows around the body — over those that continued to smoke tobacco cigarettes. 

The research was conducted out of Britain’s Dundee University, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and funded by the British Heart Foundation charity.

Ex-smokers who had successfully transitioned to vaping saw a marked boost to their vascular function, which significantly lowers their risk of developing cardiovascular disease and having a heart attack or stroke. 

While they emphasized that long-term effects of e-cig starter kits are still unknown, they are far “less harmful than tobacco cigarettes when it comes to vascular health”. 

British addiction and toxicology experts also noted that while the U.S.-specific phenomenon of injuries linked to vaping vitamin E acetate and THC have taken over recent media headlines, there’s still no evidence of a similar outbreak in the UK or elsewhere where vaping products are widely used.

This refers to how the vessel expands to allow blood to freely rush through them. The results showed that once switched to vaping, the potential of heart attacks and stroke risks had been greatly reduced across the board.  

According to research gathered from the study, many chemicals found in the smoke of combustible cigarettes is known to narrow a person’s arteries, which can increase the risk of life-threatening blockages. Each participant received a flow-mediate dilation score labeling the average healthy non-smokers with 7.7%, smokers with 5.5% and those who switched from smoking to e-cig starter kits for a month possess a score in between of 6.7%.
