A recent publication from the US government Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that electronic cigarettes are playing a significant role in smoking cessation attempts and in actual quitting.

Over 30 thousand people were interviewed, including respondents from nationally representative households in the USA. The report is the first of its kind to estimate the use of e-cigarette among U.S. adults. Here are the main highlights:

  • 48% of current smokers tried an e-cigarette at least once and 16% are current vapers (vape “every day” or “some days”).
  • 55% of recent quitters (those who last smoked less than a year before the survey) had tried e-cigarettes and 22% of them are current vapers.
  • 9% of long-term quitters (those who had last smoked more than a year before the survey) had tried e-cigarettes and 2% of them still vape.
  • Just 3% of people who have never smoked tried an e-cigarette and only 0.4% of them became regular vapers.

The study shows that people who had never smoked before rarely become regular vapers. This suggests that there is no reason to fear a rising tide of new smokers in wake of the vaping revolution. In fact, e-cigarettes have once again proven to have an unbeatable success in helping smokers quit.
