Study supports that vaping remains safer than combustible cigarettes

According to the University of Dundee, combustible cigarette smokers can start improving their health within weeks of switching to an e-cig starter kit. The progress of participants was closely monitored over one-month, leading researchers to discover that health risks, such as heart attacks and strokes, were less common in those who successfully made the switch. How was this research determined, you ask? Through the analyzation of your autonomic body responses, of course.    

What’s an autonomic body response?

Your autonomic nervous system largely controls functions such as heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, pupillary response, urination, and sexual arousal. In simple terms, it’s a system that’s regulated by your brain, naturally, allowing a variety of body processes to take place without you even knowing it. 

The study 

The study was conducted by a group of researchers at the University and was published last month in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. 114 smokers who were transitioning between traditional cigarettes and e-cigs were monitored and inspected at the end of one month to measure the flow-mediate dilation of their blood vessels. This refers to how the vessel expands to allow blood to freely rush through them. The results showed that once switched to vaping, the potential of heart attacks and stroke risks had been greatly reduced across the board.  

According to research gathered from the study, many chemicals found in the smoke of combustible cigarettes is known to narrow a person’s arteries, which can increase the risk of life-threatening blockages. Each participant received a flow-mediate dilation score labeling the average healthy non-smokers with 7.7%, smokers with 5.5% and those who switched from smoking to e-cig starter kits for a month possess a score in between of 6.7%. 

What was the result?

“We now have clear evidence they’re less harmful than tobacco cigarettes,” said Jacob George, one of the researchers. 

The key take-home from this study was that smokers can greatly benefit from making the transition, however, e-cig starter kits “should not be tried by non-smokers or children, as they’re meant to be used as a nicotine replacement therapy to help ex-smokers refrain from using tobacco products and assist them in lowering their nicotine concentration needs.
