Thirty U.S. states upped or added taxes on vaping products in 2022. With such a rapid increase—27 states in seven years—it’s become harder and harder for responsible, adult vapers to purchase their e-cig products and keep on par with vaping budgets. When e-cigs were first introduced to the market, retailers only had to worry about regular taxes. However, now every shipment crossing state lines is subject to a different level of taxation, making it difficult to keep up with.
No state is the same
There are currently no federal restrictions on vape product sales within the United States, instead, there are state excise taxes on each e-cig product. The confusing part is that while some states have vape-specific sales taxes, others will allow local jurisdictions to establish their vape taxes. If that isn’t enough to comprehend, vape retailers like us who sell online have an added complexity of needing to comply with the laws and regulations of each state where their customers purchase from, including sales tax nexus requirements.
Here is a list of states that currently don’t have excuse taxes on vape products according to the Federation of Tax Administrators:
As of February 2022, the states without vape taxes are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Caroline, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas.
It’s important to know that while Indiana currently doesn’t have a vape excise tax, it will be taking effect on July 1 of this year. Also, Alaska doesn’t have a statewide vape excise tax, but many municipalities within the state collect a local tax on vaping products.
Many more states will likely start collecting excise tax on vaping products soon. So, if you live in one of the states that currently doesn’t collect taxes, we recommend stocking up on your products to avoid paying more down the road.

Thank you for this update. I live in Illinois and since it isn’t on your list here I presume it has a tax on ecig. Some time ago I discovered your on line sales and this is better for me. I am a Sr. Citizen and I do not drive so am dependent on a Son to drive me to grocery stores and such. He is very good about that but I try to keep my need for a drive somewhere as seldom as possible. The first time I called Logic to place an order I was so impressed with Mike, I have been doing it by phone ever since and it has been wonderful. I love your product The speed with which it arrives is wonderful. Your tobacco ecig is perfect and they have made my life a whole lot more comforting. I also have told my Dr about them and he was familiar with the product and does not object to my using them. Thank you for bringing a lot of pleasure into my life. Gratefully, Maribeth Dunkley
